A handful of issues we expect to pop up during the legislative session
As state legislators descend upon Nashville once again, here’s a look at some issues we expect to come up over the next several months. It’s not an exhaustive list, to be sure, but a head’s-up about some things for state government watchers to keep on their radar.
Legislation aimed at the opioid epidemic — which Gov. BIll Haslam has called “the greatest challenge we face in Tennessee” — could come from multiple directions this session. House Speaker (and Republican gubernatorial candidate) Beth Harwell created a task force on the issue last year, and the Haslam administration is examining it too. What they’ll come up with remains to be seen, but the issue can’t be ignored. In 2016, there were reportedly more than 1,600 deaths in the state due to drug overdoses.
