Children under age 12 die from gun accidents in the United States about once a week, on average. Almost every death begins with the same basic circumstances: an unsecured and loaded gun, a guardian’s lapse in attention. USA TODAY and AP

A first-degree murder charge was thrown out this week in Shelby County General Sessions Court for a 26-year-old father in the death of his 3-year-old son, Kash Sharp.
Judge Karen Massey dismissed the charge but found probable cause for reckless homicide, gun and drug paraphernalia charges against the father, Cortez Wilkerson.
Kash was found shot in the head the afternoon of July 8 at the New Horizon apartments west of the Memphis International Airport. A 4-year-old girl, 4-year-old boy, 8-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy have also been shot in Memphis since Friday in accidental shootings.
