NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) —
Medical marijuana in Tennessee clears an important hurdle.
A House committee passed the bill Wednesday that legalizes cannabis oil.
Some people in favor of the move are like a couple in Hermitage.
Debra Young has multiple sclerosis and takes powerful painkillers like Oxycodone on a regular basis. Medical marijuana would be another option for her – if this bill passes Tennessee’s Legislature.
It’s been an uphill battle on Capitol Hill for about 15 years. Rep. Sherry Jones has been sponsoring bills session after session.
“There’s no study out there that has ever been done to say that medical marijuana is dangerous,” Jones told FOX 17 News.
Some lawmakers say they’re conflicted, because there’s no FDA approval of medical cannabis right now.
Others worry legalizing it could lead to increased crime.
The bill will now go to the full committee for discussion and debate, before it has a chance to be passed.
